Casa dolce casa?

Home sweet home? A reflection on violence during the quarantine

Chaos is the first word that comes to your mind as soon as you open your eyes in the morning.

Virus, statistics, daily numbers, graphs to be observed, peaks of infection... panic.

The ordinance is clear: "Stay at home", "Only in this way you are safe." And it is absolutely understandable, don't get me wrong; you have to be very careful, rigorously respect the rules, for our and others’ health, for our survival. The routine has now turned into a vicious cycle where everything has taken over, no matter whether it is day or night, our greatest concern is to decide the menu of the day. All this accompanied by the fears that we bring in, some created by the situation, others brought in over time. But what if these fears towards the following day are added to the present ones?

A "present" that has its own shape, its very visible “corona”, unlike the viruses that are bringing the whole world to its knees. It is silent but widespread. It is not a molecule that survives on surfaces, which vanishes with alcohol. This virus is composed by human traits, has a name and surname, embodies a status in society. Invisible to the eyes of those who do not experience their relentless action on their skin and mind. Yup! I feel angry, because despite the decrees, the laws and all that a State represents, once again, they have confirmed that they cannot, and do not want to stop, defend, arrest, fin "the virus" which, thanks to the isolation of the quarantine, unleashes himself by killing his wife, sister, daughter. Few, if nobody, have mentioned the fighters living with the gender-based violence virus in their homes, and I have seen and followed up several pseudo-political debates. Or maybe yes, some might have spoken about the issues, but with a lowered volume, with the usual cliché that characterizes the theme.

You know, I missed a lot of things during this quarantine, because it's like that, the situation we are stuck in sucks, and admitting it doesn't make us weaker than the others or less sophisticated.

However, my thoughts today go to all those women, who besides everything listed above, wake up with their throats tightened by fear for the next day and not only...
