Dalla mia esperienza in Brasile mi sono rimaste molte cose, e tra queste c'è l'amore dei brasiliani per i social network (secondo un recente studio, il paese è al terzo posto al mondo in termini di ore medie al giorno davanti allo schermo). Da tempo ormai, ho notato come assiduo seguace delle reti brasiliane, che la cosiddetta "cultura della cancellazione" (“cultura de cancelamento” in portoghese) sta guadagnando sempre più forza, diventando una sorta di giustiziere sociale all'interno del mondo cibernetico.
In una società in cui, vogliamo pensare, il razzismo è sempre meno tollerato, le battute sulle vecchie abitudini legate alle donne non sono più divertenti e il bullismo online è combattuto, la “cancellazione” attraverso i social si è tradotto nella esclusione di alcuni brand o personaggi pubblici per atteggiamenti o commenti che possono essere letti come errati all'interno di un approccio di militanza femminista, anti-razzista, LGBTQ+... A volte ciò è temporaneo, altre volte l’interessato deve redimersi pubblicamente e mostrare un cambiamento, almeno esternamente, per essere nuovamente accettato. Ai fini pratici, ciò può portare al boicottaggio di un marchio o di prodotti oppure alla perdita di finanziatori che non vogliono più essere ad esso associati.
Questa punizione è spesso vista come una forma di educazione nella misura in cui può generare un cambiamento di atteggiamento e generare discussioni nella sfera pubblica su razzismo, xenofobia o altre intolleranze. È generalmente accettabile che le persone abbiano, effettivamente, bisogno di capire che certi comportamenti non sono più tollerabili all'interno della società. Inoltre, per capire perché si verificano queste cancellazioni, è necessario tenere conto non solo della punizione per le questioni sociali, ma anche della libertà che le piattaforme digitali ci danno, facilitando la manifestazione di ideali su ciò che merita di essere dibattuto. A questo va aggiunto che tutti noi abbiamo esperienze diverse e talvolta potremmo non riconoscere i nostri errori prima di essere rifiutati su Internet. Tuttavia, il mondo, soprattutto su Internet, desidera ora la perfezione, sollevando interrogativi sulla possibilità che le ingiustizie vengano commesse proprio nella ricerca della giustizia.
Occorre distinguere tra quelle che sono le lotte a favore di cause importanti, che valgono e fanno cambiare i comportamenti, da quello che è un abuso di censura e persecuzione che impedisce il dialogo e aumenta la polarizzazione. Il linciaggio virtuale spesso è accompagnato da una cancellazione a volte ha l'effetto di disumanizzare la persona in questione, impedendone l'apprendimento e la crescita. Senza voler scusare certi atteggiamenti che meritano un rimprovero frontale e conseguente cancellazione se l'atteggiamento o il discorso viene ripetuto o omesso nel tempo e che potrebbe avere anche conseguenze legali, scommetterei su un approccio più pedagogico che cerchi alleati piuttosto che ragioni per separarci di più. Vorrei vedere questa situazione come un'opportunità per costituire nuove mobilitazioni, comprendere limiti, modi anche per migliorare i social network e creare forum pubblici, oltre a consentire il lavoro di educatori e politici che consentono di generare un dibattito su comportamenti punibili ed educativi. Non dimentichiamo che nessuno è nato sapendo tutto e il processo di decostruzione è, in larga misura, un lavoro lungo e continuo.

I have many things left from my experience in Brazil, and among them is Brazilians' fondness for social networks (according to a recent study, the country is in third place in the world in terms of average hours per day in front of the screen). For some time now, and as an assiduous follower of the Brazilian networks, the so-called “cancellation culture” (“cultura de cancelamento” in Portuguese) has been gaining more and more strength through them, which has become a kind of social vigilante within the cyber world.
In a society where, we want to think, racism is less and less tolerated, jokes about old habits related to women are no longer funny and online bullying has been fought, “canceling” through social networks translates into excluding certain brands or public figures for attitudes or comments that can be read as erroneous within a feminist, racial, LGBTQ+… militancy approach. Sometimes it is temporary, other times the object in question of cancellation needs to publicly redeem himself and show a change, at least externally, to be accepted again. For practical purposes, this can lead to the boycott of a brand or products and the loss of sponsors that no longer want to be linked to a canceled person.
This "punishment" is often seen as a form of education insofar as it can generate a change of attitude and generate discussion in the public sphere about racism, xenophobia or other intolerances. It is generally acceptable that people, actually, need to understand that certain behaviors are no longer tolerable within society. Additionally, to understand why these cancellations occur, it is necessary not only to take into account the punishment for social issues, but also the freedom that digital platforms give us, facilitating the manifestation of ideals about what deserves to be debated. Moreover, we all have different experiences and sometimes we may not recognize our mistakes before them being rejected on the Internet. However, the world, especially on the Internet, longs now for perfection, raising questions about the possibility of injustices being committed precisely in the search for justice.
It is necessary to differentiate between what the struggles are in favor of important causes, which are worthwhile and make people change their behavior, from what is an abuse of censorship and persecution that prevents dialogue and increases polarization. The virtual lynching that is often accompanied by a cancellation sometimes has the effect of dehumanizing the person in question, impeding their learning and growth. Without wanting to excuse certain attitudes that deserve a frontal reproach and consequent cancellation if the attitude or discourse is repeated or omitted in time and that might have even legal consequences, I would bet on a more pedagogical approach that seeks allies rather than reasons to put us more apart. I would like to see this as an opportunity to constitute new mobilizations, understanding limits, ways to even improve social networks and create public forums, in addition to allowing the work of educators and politicians that make it possible to generate a debate on punishable and educational behaviors. Let's not forget that no one was born knowing everything and the deconstruction process is, to a large extent, a long and continuous work.
